Flooring

Flooring options changed from Mosaic to Italian and other imported costly marbles over a span of five decades. Every option has it’s own merits & demerits but change was necessitated with the influence of modern architecture, affordability of users and availability of different options in the market.

In category of natural stones, marble offers a unique, luxurious, and elegant appearance. In India, marble is famous from Makrana in Rajasthan. Among different options of marble , Doongri or Chak Dungri marble is most famous product for flooring from Makrana. This material was in immense use before 2005.

Dungri  marble is generally available in white base with grey lines or patterns and white base with light brown lines or patterns. Generally white base with grey lines or patterns is preferred by the users. Thickness of marble slab after cuttingfor flooring is around 17mm.

Dungri marble is essentially a calcite stone, known for its high calcium content. The main chemical is calcium carbonate (CaCO₃).The minor impurities are silicate minerals that can appear as subtle grey, brown, or pink veins/shades in the white base of the marble. The purity is a key reason for its durability and ability to retain its shine over a long period.

Dungri retains it’s shine and lustre forever. It does not require any filling or repair during it’s service life. Cost of good quality doongri ranges from  Rs 150 to Rs 300 per sq foot depending upon quality, whiteness &, size of lot etc. Its high density and calcite composition help keep interiors cool, making it ideal for tropical or hot climates. Unlike tiles, Dungri marble can be re-polished every few years to restore its original luster. Since marble is naturally porous, experts recommend sealing it every 6–12 months to prevent staining and moisture damage.
